What are penile conditions and treatments?
Penile conditions and treatments relate to issues affecting the penis. There are a broad variety of penile conditions – they range from minor conditions to those which require emergency treatment or surgery. Penile conditions can develop over time, or be congenital (present at birth).
Am I a good candidate for penile treatments?
You may be suitable for penile treatments if you have one of the following conditions:
- Balanitis – which is an inflammation of the penis head (glans).
- Balanoposthitis – which is similar to balanitis but also involves the inflammation of the foreskin.
- Epispadias – a rare birth defect which is characterised by an underdeveloped urethra.
- Hypospadias – a birth defect which is characterised by the location of the urethra opening on the underside of the penis, rather than the tip.
- Penile cancer – cancer of the penis typically starts in the penis’s skin cells. The five basic types are; basal cell cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, melanoma and sarcoma.
- Peyronie’s disease – a penile condition which involves the formation of scar tissue inside the penis, causing erections to be painful and curved.
- Phimosis and paraphimosis – phimosis is characterised by difficulty retracting the foreskin, and paraphimosis is characterised by difficulty repositioning the foreskin.
- Priapism – a condition which involves persistent erections that can last for hours and are not relieved by an orgasm. These erections can be painful, and not always linked to arousal
What to Expect from Penile Treatments
Circumcision
Circumcision refers to the surgical removal of the foreskin (the fold of skin covering the head of the penis). Circumcision can be performed for a wide variety of reasons, including;
- Phimosis (tight foreskin)
- Religious or cultural reasons
- HIV prevention
- Balanitis (inflammation of the head of the penis)
- Paraphimosis
- Penile cancer (difficulty repositioning the foreskin)
Penile Biopsy
A penile biopsy is carried out to investigate the potential existence of cancer in the penis and is performed by removing sample tissue from the affected area of the penis.
There are two types of penile biopsy, incisional and excisional. Incisional biopsy is where the surgeon uses a scalpel to remove a small section of the affected area. Excisional biopsy is where the whole affected area is removed.
Both procedures are relatively straightforward and patients will usually be able to return home on the same day.
Dorsal Slit
A dorsal slit involves a single incision along the length of the foreskin with the intent of exposing the glans without the removal of tissue. It is most often used as a less invasive alternative to circumcision in instances where circumcision is considered impractical. Dorsal slit is most commonly used to treat paraphimosis or balanitis where attempts to reduce swelling via less invasive means have been unsuccessful.
Recovery from Penile Treatment
Your recovery from a treatment for a penile condition will depend on the nature of the treatment, although any pain should subside within two weeks of the procedure. You may need to take a week off work and you should be able to return to normal physical activity within four weeks.
