Study shows UroLift may offer faster early recovery than Rezūm

,
Urolift vs Rezūm

A recent analysis from the CLEAR trial (NCT04338776), shared in Urology Times, has highlighted that UroLift therapy may provide men with Benign Prostate Enlargement a faster recovery in the early period following treatment compared to Rezūm therapy, while both treatments showed similar improvements in urinary symptoms over time.

The CLEAR trial findings

The CLEAR trial followed 184 men with Benign Prostate Enlargement, assessing symptom scores, recovery timelines, and quality of life. At one month, patients treated with UroLift demonstrated greater improvements in symptom scores and quality of life, as well as a quicker return to normal activities. However, by three and twelve months post-treatment, outcomes between UroLift and Rezūm were comparable, with both therapies significantly improving urinary symptoms while preserving sexual function for most men.

These findings offer reassurance to men considering minimally invasive treatments, confirming that both UroLift and Rezūm are effective while offering slightly different recovery experiences. The trial continues to assess the longer term outcomes of these treatments (expected Dec 2025).

UroLift Therapy

UroLift is a minimally invasive procedure for men with Benign Prostate Enlargement that uses small, permanent implants to hold back the enlarged prostate tissue that is blocking the urethra. This treatment restores normal urine flow without the need for cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue, allowing for a rapid return to daily activities and preserving sexual function, including ejaculation and erectile function. It is typically performed under local or light general anaesthesia and is often completed as a day-case procedure, with many men noticing symptom improvement soon after treatment.

Rezūm Therapy

Rezūm therapy also offers a minimally invasive solution for Benign Prostate Enlargement but uses water vapour (steam) to treat excess prostate tissue. The steam is delivered directly into the prostate, causing the treated cells to shrink and be reabsorbed by the body over several weeks, relieving the obstruction. Rezūm can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation, with many men experiencing a gradual but significant improvement in urinary symptoms while preserving sexual function.

Urolift vs Rezūm

Both UroLift and Rezūm are designed to relieve urinary symptoms in men with Benign Prostate Enlargement while avoiding the risks of traditional surgery and preserving sexual function. UroLift often provides a faster initial recovery, with quicker symptom relief and minimal downtime. Rezūm offers a different approach, using thermal therapy to gradually reduce prostate size, and may be suitable for men who prefer a treatment without implants.
